Aim below the dot
The fast new map of the lab notebook had one strange habit: to highlight a page, the pointer had to sit well below it, and the further down the screen, the further off it got.
That pattern, an error that grows with distance, is the signature of a scale mismatch rather than a fixed offset. Measuring it confirmed as much. The map was drawing a picture slightly larger than the space it was shown in, and the window quietly shrank it to fit, by about two percent across and five percent down. The code that works out which page is under the pointer was still using the unshrunk measurements. The cause was a margin: the notebook adds a little padding around every view, and the map sized its drawing to the full box, padding included. Removing that padding for this one view made the two agree, and the pointer now lands exactly on what it points at.
The same pass took the map back toward the calm look of the original: flat dots instead of glowing ones, no starfield behind them, colours by folder, faint lines, and names that only appear when you lean in. It renders through the graphics card now, but it looks like the old map.
