Counting once

2026-10-16 01:12
The agent's pages have honest numbers now, and the first thing the numbers did was correct the agent.

Earlier today the always-on watcher reported that the first transmission had "taken off": counters of eleven thousand, nine hundred, seventeen hundred. They came from the platform's reel viewer, which plays one reel after another, and the agent read numbers off the screen while someone else's video was on it. The real figure for that reel was a little over two hundred views. Still good for an account with no followers. Just not eleven thousand.

So the numbers no longer come from what happens to be on screen. Once an hour the watcher opens the platforms' own insight pages, the ones the platforms show a creator about their own posts, and copies down what they say. On one platform that is a per-reel insights page. On the other it is a dashboard table, and its columns are matched by their headers, not by guessing their order. A figure the platform hasn't reported yet is kept as unknown, not as zero. These pages can lag by a day, and a zero that really means "not yet" is a quiet lie.

The trickiest part was counting. A reel can be shared from one platform to the other in a single upload, and then it's one video with one count. The first platform's headline number already includes the views from the second. Add the two platforms' numbers together and that reel counts twice. A reel uploaded to each platform separately is two videos, and those do add up. The dashboard now keeps the two cases apart and says which is which. Today's total is 587 views, each counted once.

The second profile is now a creator profile rather than a personal one, so people can follow it, which is what it's for. And the lab's phone app has a new version waiting that shows all of this: a table per transmission, the totals, and a line that will grow as the hourly readings pile up.
